Every year, I choose a theme for the next 365 days. It’s like a wrapper around my litany of resolutions, and it’s typically one word that I tattoo around my workspace to keep me focused (“Focus” has also been a theme of past years, fwiw). This year, it’s “Consistency”, which has never been my strong suit. I was blessed with a brain that comes up with lots of ideas, and it’s allowed me to launch businesses and take risks and open lots of doors. That same brain also happens to say yes to too much, create insurmountable to do lists, and venture into the impossible. So this year, consistency it is – and that includes launching and consistently writing this newsletter.
“If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s.”
~ Carl Jung
Picking up the pen
I’ve always loved writing. As a child, I had notebooks full of stories, ideas, lists, and thoughts. As an adult, I wrote letters, dreams, business plans, and risks. Today, with the frantic schedule of running a tech company, parenting, and rehabilitating a Spanish estate, most of my writing has been boiled down to a series of Post-It Notes and task lists. But I miss the depth, discovery, and connection that long-form writing brings, so I’ve decided to launch The Audacity Report, a digest of people, paths and creations that inspire different ways of experiencing life.
When it comes to writing on paper, my journal of choice is A-Journal, based in the Netherlands. Their clean, pop-of-color designs are perfect for organizing a hurried mind.
What The Audacity Report is all about
In addition to my love of writing, I also love aging. Each year, I fall deeper into my true self, and think far less about what the world thinks I’m supposed to be doing. The Audacity Report is an ode to people who are on that same journey, figuring out what it means to merge necessity (a liveable wage, responsibilities to families and friends, taxes and bills and all of the other life requirements) with fulfillment (hobbies, joys, purpose, and the parts of life that energize and inspire us). I’m a big believer everyone deserves to have both, and I also think examples of others mixing necessity with fulfillment is a great way to discover our own perfect blend of the two. So each week, my goal is to share the people, paths and creations that embody an audacious life – one that is well-lived, at least by the definition of its owner. I’m sure I’ll learn a thing or seven while covering the audacity of others, and I hope you do, too.
My half-baked plan
I find the best execution is rooted in a half-baked plan. When I get too specific, I miss out on opportunities, and when I’m too vague, I don’t act. So here’s what I will promise today:
I’ll deliver The Audacity Report once per week. I’m not sure which day, and I’m not sure each will be as good as the last, but my theme of consistency is going to make the distribution a requirement. So 52 issues it is, starting with this one.
I’m going to experiment with lots of different formats, so I’d love your feedback. Let’s kick it off with a quick poll on what you want to see here.
My goal is to rally a small but engaged community of people who are living life on their own terms. The more diverse our experiences, the better, but I’d rather we be 50 people who build real connection, versus 100,000 who skim some content. We all hold a part in determining what that community should be, and how we want it to evolve. There’s excitement in the unknown.
Current curiosities
Here’s what’s currently sparking curiosity in my world:
I’m obsessing over these “Life Jackets” by Cara Brown. She custom designs the embroidery, patches and pins to create an heirloom piece that highlights the chapters of your journey. It definitely makes you think about what would go on yours, right?
🎵 “Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived.” Our family spent New Year’s in London with our dear friends, and had the pleasure of catching Six, the electrifying musical that reimagines the six wives of Henry VIII as pop stars telling their own stories – and it’s a masterclass in audacious living. These queens take history’s narrative – one that reduced them to a singular identity as “wives” – and flip it, reclaiming their voices with sass, power, and killer beats. The show is unapologetically loud, colorful, and in-your-face, just like the queens themselves. Whether you’re pitching your business, standing up for your beliefs, or just living authentically, don’t dim your light for anyone. Confidence isn’t arrogance; it’s power.
Finally, I’ll leave you with a question: what’s your take on New Year’s resolutions? Do you love them, hate them, or have a special way of approaching them? Reply to this email: I’d love to hear.
¡Inspiradora!
Love this and Chuck and I are so excited to join in the journey !
